Umno's latest spectacle involves a nationwide crusade to gather signatures, appealing for a full pardon for their former leader, Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

This attempt to sidestep the legal process and brush aside Najib's crimes raises eyebrows and exposes the party's desperation.

The irony is palpable as Umno, in its fervour, conveniently overlooks the ongoing court proceedings and existing charges against Najib. The audacity to seek a pardon for a convicted leader speaks volumes about Umno's priorities, putting political allegiance above justice and accountability.

Umno's plea for a royal pardon, coupled with the suggestion of parole or house arrest, reflects a disdain for the rule of law. This move not only undermines the judiciary but also sends a disconcerting message about the party's commitment to ethical governance.

Lokman Noor Adam's acknowledgement of party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's supposed role in expediting the pardon process raises questions about the undue influence wielded within the corridors of power.

The swift reduction of Najib's sentence and fine, seemingly in contrast to the established legal timeline, adds another layer of scepticism to the entire affair.

The divisive reactions within Umno itself, with accusations of deceit and acknowledgement that "we were played," underscore the internal turmoil caused by this attempt to salvage Najib's reputation.

Such dissent reveals the fragility of Umno's unity, as some members grapple with the moral implications of supporting a leader convicted of corruption.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke's assertion that the cabinet had no influence in the board's decision attempts to distance the government from the controversy.

However, the public remains sceptical, questioning the transparency of the pardon process and the potential political manoeuvring at play.

As Najib's daughter expresses disappointment and others within Umno voice dissent, it's evident that this calculated move has not united the party but exposed its internal fault lines.

The nation watches as Umno attempts to rewrite the narrative around Najib's conviction, leaving many to wonder whether justice can truly prevail in the face of political machinations.
