Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi was unequivocal in regards to the possibility that Umno and Pas might cooperate someday. Never will Umno fall into the “monitor lizard’s hole” of cooperating with Pas for the second time, he said, in reference to the previous cooperation that Umno formed with Pas through the Muafakat Nasional (MN) in 2009.
One can only speculate as to what Puad Zarkashi means by a falling into a “monitor lizard’s hole” or “lubang biawak”, but reading the context, we can judge that Puad was probably likening the possibility to be something that is so unpleasant and revolting, the chances of it occurring is next to never. That is why other than referring it to “falling into a monitor's lizard's hole”, he will also refer to cooperating with Pas as being bitten by a snake twice.
“Pokoknya Umno tidak boleh dipatuk ular kali kedua. Elok BN masuk PRN Melaka tanpa kerjasama PPBM (Bersatu). ”
(In conclusion, Umno must not be bitten by a snake twice. It is better for BN to participate in the Malacca State election without cooperation with Bersatu)
Puad was clearly unimpressed with Pas’s gesture of showing solidarity with former Umno leader Najib Tun Razak, by organising a solidarity with Najib rally in Putrajaya last Monday (Jan 6).
According to Puad, the rally was just a part of PAS's effort to revive Muafakat Nasional, and pave the way for the formation of a new government.
“This is why, out of the blue, PN had taken on Najib’s cause,” he said.
Although he said that he did not mind the rally as it reflected Najib’s enduring popularity among Malaysians, he was adamant in seeing the rally as something that Pas was chiefly doing for the sake of political mileage.
According to Puad, PN’s true intention was to turn the solidarity gathering for the former prime minister into a “rally for threatened Malays.”
“This is the narrative they wanted to push. They aimed to replicate the success of the anti-ICERD rally,” he said in a Facebook post.
For context, the anti-ICERD rally held in December 2018, during the first Pakatan Harapan government, saw more than 30,000 participants gather at Dataran Merdeka in response to the Pakatan Harapan government’s decision to consider ratifying the ICERD.
The rally, organised by a coalition of Umno, PAS and several Malay-Muslim NGOs, claimed that ratifying ICERD was a threat to Malay rights and Islam, and forced the government to eventually reverse its decision to ratify the ICERD in the face of the intense opposition.
Puad However, was harsh on the chances that PN will be able to replicate the anti-ICERD rally's success.
"In conclusion, you are losers" Puad will also exclaim, to not only dismiss the possibility that Pas will succeed in its aim to translate the solidarity with Najib rally to become something to the anti-ICERD rally, but also indicate why Umno cancelled its joining with Pas to conduct a solidarity rally for Najib at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya last Monday.
