Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki asserted today that the absolute power granted to the Yang di Pertuan Agong should not be questioned by anyone. He expressed gratitude to Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah for consistently defending and upholding the institution of the Malay Rulers during his reign as the Agong.

Asyraf emphasized that the statement aligns with the Constitution, highlighting the unchallengeable authority of the Yang di Pertuan Agong. He urged against dissenting voices questioning decisions made by the former Yang di Pertuan Agong, particularly in the context of the Pardons Board.

Speaking to reporters after an Umno special meeting with division chiefs, Asyraf reiterated the party's unified commitment to defend former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. He dismissed DAP publicity secretary Tony Pua's statement regarding the Pardons Board's decision to halve Najib’s sentence, stating that Pua’s opinion does not reflect the unity government’s stance. Asyraf also confirmed Umno's intention to lodge a police report against the former Damansara MP.

Najib had initially received a 12-year prison sentence and a RM210 million fine for abuse of power, breach of trust, and money laundering related to RM42 million from SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

The official statement on behalf of the Federal Territories Pardons Board, issued by the Prime Minister’s Department’s Legal Affairs Division as the board’s secretariat, explained that the decision to halve Najib’s sentence was made following a January 29 meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya. The meeting, chaired by then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, considered five pardons applications, including Najib's.

According to the Federal Constitution, the Agong chairs the meetings of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories, which comprises the attorney general, the Federal Territories minister, and a maximum of three other members appointed by the Agong.

This decision by the Pardons Board has stirred significant attention and debate, particularly regarding the extent of the Agong's powers and the implications for Najib's legal proceedings. Asyraf's remarks underscore Umno's unwavering support for Najib and its stance on the broader issue of royal authority.

The case against Najib stems from his involvement in the 1MDB scandal, one of the largest financial frauds in history. The decision to reduce his sentence has sparked mixed reactions, with some applauding it as a step towards reconciliation and others criticizing it as a miscarriage of justice.

Despite the controversy, Umno remains steadfast in its position, highlighting the importance of respecting the decisions made by the country's highest authority. The party's unity in defending Najib reflects its broader commitment to upholding the rule of law and the constitutional framework.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the implications of this decision are likely to reverberate across Malaysia's legal and political spheres, shaping future debates on the balance of power between the monarchy and the government.

The decision to reduce Najib's sentence has raised questions about the independence and impartiality of Malaysia's judicial system. Critics argue that the move could undermine public trust in the judiciary and raise concerns about political interference in legal matters.

On the other hand, supporters of the decision view it as a demonstration of the Agong's prerogative powers and a step towards reconciliation and unity. They argue that the reduction in Najib's sentence reflects a broader desire to move past political divisions and focus on national development.

The controversy surrounding Najib's case highlights the complex interplay between legal, political, and institutional dynamics in Malaysia. It also underscores the challenges of balancing the principles of justice and the rule of law with the need for political stability and national unity.

As Malaysia navigates these challenges, it will be crucial to uphold the integrity and independence of its institutions while ensuring transparency and accountability in decision-making processes. The outcome of Najib's case will likely have far-reaching implications for Malaysia's legal system and its democratic governance.
