PETALING JAYA: Umno’s Supreme Council is set to have its first meeting tonight following the formation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Cabinet.

Council member Puad Zarkashi said this in a Facebook post, but did not mention the time and venue for the meeting.

“Umno’s Supreme Council must remain as a guide and provide a check and balance to the government. No compromising on that,” he said.

Puad also said the government must expedite the formation of royal commissions of inquiry on issues plaguing the country, including those involving former attorney-general Tommy Thomas’ memoir, Tabung Haji, and Batu Puteh.

He said Perikatan Nasional cannot object to such probes, and that it must be open to being investigated on former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s alleged misappropriation of funds.

“This is not about revenge or abuse of power. It’s about finding out the truth,” he said.

On Monday, FMT reported that Muhyiddin said he did not fear being investigated over the RM530 billion spent by his administration when it was in power.

He insisted that he had not misappropriated any of the funds and dismissed claims that there were leakages in the government’s expenditure.

On Tuesday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission announced that it had opened an investigation paper into the alleged misappropriation of funds by the previous government.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the matter but declined to reveal more details.
