UMNO’s involvement in the current Unity Government is not about endorsing or whitewashing the Democratic Action Party (DAP), but rather a calculated decision to protect Malaysia from deeper political and economic turmoil, says Negeri Sembilan UMNO chief Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias.

In a recent statement, Jalaluddin addressed growing criticism from within the Malay political sphere, asserting that UMNO’s collaboration with its former rivals is rooted in national interest rather than political compromise. He stressed that the party remains steadfast in its commitment to Malay-Muslim values and is not aligning ideologically with DAP.

Jalaluddin acknowledged that UMNO and DAP have long held opposing views, often clashing on ideology and core principles. However, he stressed that politics is not static—it shifts in response to the evolving needs and realities of society and governance.

He framed UMNO’s participation in the Unity Government as a strategic move rooted in realpolitik, intended to help stabilise the country amid economic challenges and political disarray. Jalaluddin criticised divisive rhetoric based on outdated political rivalries, saying that national unity must now take precedence..

He emphasized that UMNO’s collaboration with DAP does not equate to surrendering its identity or influence. Instead, it ensures that the concerns of the Malay-Muslim community remain integral to national decision-making processes.

According to him, the party’s decision to re-engage in mainstream politics was not driven by ambition, but by a belief that UMNO must be part of the governing coalition to effectively advocate for the interests of Malays, bumiputera, and Islamic institutions.

Jalaluddin highlighted that under the leadership of Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, UMNO is forward-looking and focused on constructive governance rather than dwelling on past conflicts. The choice to be part of the ruling coalition, he said, was made out of responsibility, not political expediency.

He underscored the importance of having a seat at the table, particularly when policies affecting key segments of the population—such as Malays, bumiputera, and religious affairs—are being shaped.

His remarks come amid ongoing scrutiny of UMNO’s alliance with Pakatan Harapan, both from internal factions and external critics. Nevertheless, Jalaluddin asserted that the party’s role in the coalition is essential to prevent further national decline, framing it as a necessary step rather than a compromise of core values.
