PETALING JAYA: PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has warned that Umno will turn against its friends if it obtains more power.

He cited instances when Umno withdrew support for Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin when he was the prime minister, and for Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu when he was Perak menteri besar.

“If you notice, when Umno feels strong, it will turn against its friends. In Perak, they withdrew support for Faizal, they changed the (menteri besar) to an Umno man.

“At the federal level, they withdrew support for Muhyiddin. We all sat in the same Cabinet, faced hardships together, (but) when things started becoming easy, 15 people withdrew support for Muhyiddin,” he said at a ceramah in Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan, last night.

“When Umno lost, PAS was the one that helped (the party). We used to lambast Umno, but later, I told people, please support Umno,” he said.

Muhyiddin was appointed the prime minister following the Sheraton Move in February 2020, which resulted in the collapse of the 22-month-old Pakatan Harapan administration, led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He held the post for only 17 months before Umno MPs retracted their support for him in the PN-led government. He was succeeded by then Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob after a compromise was reached between BN and PN.
