Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh has remained resolute in his stance to boycott KK Mart for selling socks printed with the word "Allah," despite criticism from unity government allies. In a series of Facebook posts, he dismissed rebukes and asserted his commitment to defending Islam.
Addressing DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, Akmal emphasized that he did not require DAP's "permission" to defend Islam, stating, “Whoever you are, I'm not afraid and I'm not shaken. Full stop! Maintain the boycott!”
He reiterated his position in another post aimed at Loke, emphasizing that the issue was about "maintaining Islam's purity" rather than racism. He vowed to oppose any party that defamed Islam, regardless of race or political belief, adding, “The one who makes this a racial issue is you!!! Shame on u. Maintain the boycott of KK Mart.”
Akmal also responded to Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, advising him to "look in the mirror first." He asserted that even without a formal position, he would continue to defend his religion, race, and homeland.
Loke, who is also the transport minister, urged Akmal to cease promoting the boycott and instead act as a "bridge builder" between communities. Tiong advised Akmal to stop "fueling the fire that has died down," especially since KK Mart had apologized and claimed its mistake was unintentional.
KK Mart issued an apology after its Bandar Sunway branch was found to be selling the offending socks, of which there were only five pairs in a shipment of 18,800 pairs. The police are investigating the matter following over 40 reports being lodged.
Despite the backlash from government officials and calls to end the boycott, Akmal Saleh remains steadfast in his conviction. He believes that defending Islam's sanctity is paramount and transcends political considerations.
Akmal's uncompromising stance has sparked a debate over the limits of religious expression and the role of political leaders in religious matters. While some support his actions as a stand for religious principles, others criticize him for potentially stoking religious tensions.
The issue has also reignited discussions about the responsibilities of businesses in respecting religious sensitivities. KK Mart's apology and the small number of offending socks in their inventory have led some to question the necessity of the boycott.
As the controversy continues, Akmal Saleh's defiance underscores the complexities of navigating religious and political sensitivities in a diverse society.
His unwavering commitment to the boycott has not only garnered support from like-minded individuals but has also drawn criticism from those who believe his approach is divisive. Some argue that his insistence on the boycott could exacerbate religious and racial tensions, especially in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country like Malaysia.
Despite the criticism, Akmal Saleh remains resolute, seeing his actions as a necessary step to uphold the sanctity of Islam. He views himself as a defender of the faith and is willing to face opposition to safeguard what he believes is right.
The ongoing police investigation into the matter reflects the seriousness of the issue and highlights the need for a delicate balance between religious beliefs and public harmony. As the debate continues, it is evident that Akmal Saleh's stance has sparked a broader discussion about religious freedoms and the responsibilities of businesses in a diverse society.
