The movement’s vice-chief, Mohd Hairi Md Shah, explained that a judicial process influenced by bias or political motives would only create the impression that the voice of youth in politics is being silenced. He noted that UMNO Youth views the investigation and potential prosecution of Dr Akmal with deep concern, stressing that the right to freedom of speech is protected under the Federal Constitution and serves as a cornerstone of democracy in Malaysia.

At the same time, UMNO Youth acknowledged that such freedoms come with responsibilities. Hairi pointed out that these rights must always be practiced within the framework of the Rukun Negara, particularly in relation to morality, decency, and respect for the rule of law. He argued that Dr Akmal’s stance had not been intended to provoke unrest but rather reflected his commitment to defending national symbols and sovereignty.

Calling for the judiciary to be left to carry out its duty without external pressure, Hairi urged that public perceptions or political campaigns should not influence the court’s decision. He also reaffirmed that UMNO Youth would continue standing in solidarity with the chief throughout the legal process, expressing confidence that he would face the challenge with resilience.

UMNO youth chief himself confirmed that he would be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court on Friday. This development followed a rally in Penang last week, where he reportedly led more than 300 supporters from UMNO, Bersatu, and PAS to protest the upside-down flag incident.

The protest was triggered after a video circulated online showing a hardware store owner hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down. The individual later apologized, admitting it was a mistake, but the incident sparked widespread anger among Malaysians, particularly in the lead-up to the country’s 68th Independence Day celebrations.

The case has drawn multiple responses, with various political groups taking opposing positions. While UMNO Youth has defended Chief’s actions, DAP’s youth wing lodged police reports nationwide, calling for firm action against him. The incident is being investigated under multiple laws, including the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, the Minor Offences Act 1955, and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
