ANY proposal by UMNO Youth for the party to withdraw from the Unity Government must be considered by the UMNO Supreme Council before any formal action, according to Barisan Nasional (BN) Secretary-General Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Speaking after attending a “Back to School” programme at Dewan Merdeka, Majlis Perbandaran Manjung, Zambry underscored that the process aligns with UMNO’s decision-making framework, which prioritises discussion at the party’s highest level.
“That is the view of the Youth wing only. As stated by the Youth Chief yesterday, any opinion or proposal will ultimately be submitted to the Supreme Council,” he said.
The remarks come after UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr Mohamad Akmal Saleh urged the party to exit the current Unity Government and revive the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance with PAS.
Speaking at the UMNO Youth Special Convention, the Merlimau State Assemblyman suggested that, should UMNO leave the government, the party should assume a position within the opposition bloc.
Zambry, who is also a member of the UMNO Supreme Council, stressed that while such calls from the Youth wing exist, the party leadership recognises the need for careful deliberation and maturity in determining UMNO’s political direction.
“In this context, as we have heard, even though the appeal has been made, Datuk Mohamad Akmal is aware that the final decision will be submitted to the UMNO Supreme Council,” he said.
The statement reinforces UMNO’s hierarchical decision-making process, signalling that unilateral calls from subsidiary wings, including the Youth movement, must pass through formal channels before influencing national political strategy. - January 4, 2025
