Kota Kinabalu:Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently launched the Sihat Synergy 2024 programme in two remote Sipitang villages, Long Pasia and Meligan.

This initiative, organised by UMS Masters in Public Health students, aims to empower rural communities through health education and services.

In Long Pasia, the programme focused on appointing ‘Ikon Sihat’ (Health Icons) from the community to provide basic health check-ups and improve communication with health services.

The theme was “Peneraju Ikon Sihat Kg. Long Pasia,” attracting over 200 villagers for various health activities.

In Meligan, the programme centred on malaria prevention under the theme “Tewaskan Malaria, Perkasakan Pedalaman Sabah” (Defeat Malaria, Empower Rural Sabah).

Activities included blood testing, preparation of organic mosquito repellents and mural paintings to raise awareness.

The local health office received 1,000 rapid diagnostic test kits to expedite malaria detection.

Both initiatives were supported by various organizations, including the UMS Four-Wheel Drive Volunteer Club, Malaysian Medical Association Sabah Branch, and the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

The programme exemplifies UMS’s commitment to improving health outcomes in rural Sabah through education, community engagement, and collaborative efforts.
