UN Secretary General António Guterres on Thursday expressed solidarity with Venezuela following the twin earthquakes that struck the country.

"I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and widespread destruction caused by the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela," he wrote on social media.

"The UN system is mobilizing assistance and working closely with the Government and our partners to support the response and the people of Venezuela. I extend my sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those injured."

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is helping with the deployment of urban search-and-rescue teams, Guterres' spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said in New York.
