The UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting later on Monday to discuss the escalating conflict in Lebanon, diplomats in New York said.

The session was scheduled at the request of France and is due to begin at 3 pm (1900 GMT), according to diplomatic sources.

The conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia has intensified in recent days with the advance of Israeli ground forces and the prospect of further attacks in the Beirut area, despite a ceasefire that was announced in mid-April.

No further details about the meeting were immediately available.
