A 39-year-old unemployed man, on the run for four years, faces a murder charge for the 2022 killing of a 63-year-old businessman in Mont Kiara.
KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with the 2022 murder of a businessman in Mont Kiara.
VV. Vadivelu, 39, had been on the run for four years before being apprehended. He is accused alongside three other individuals who were charged earlier.
The charge states that Vadivelu murdered Goh Chok Chuan, 63, at a car park near the guardhouse of Amarin Kiara, Mont Kiara, at 11.40 pm on July 11, 2022. The offence is framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read with Section 34.
The charge carries the death penalty or imprisonment of 30 to 40 years. A conviction that does not result in a death sentence also mandates at least 12 strokes of the cane.
No plea was recorded as murder cases fall under High Court jurisdiction. Prosecuting officer M. Alli Nangai did not offer bail, as the offence is non-bailable.
The prosecution requested a mention date to obtain consent to transfer the case to the High Court. Alli Nangai informed the court that the three other co-accused have already been sentenced.
They pleaded guilty under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code. Magistrate MS Arunjothy set June 8 for mention of the case.
Police reported in July 2022 that witnesses heard three gunshots before discovering the victim’s body. The victim was said to have been playing mahjong at a friend’s house in Amarin Kiara prior to the incident.
He was reportedly shot near his car, which was parked close to the guardhouse outside the residential area.
