A 57-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to a total of 20 years’ imprisonment and nine strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here after pleading guilty to raping and sodomising a 17-year-old girl.
The court ordered the jail terms to run concurrently, imposing 12 years’ imprisonment and five strokes of the cane for rape causing hurt, and a further eight years and four strokes for the second offence committed at about 7pm on Dec 22, 2025, along Jalan Kepayan.
Facts presented showed the accused, Hazmi Abdul Gaffar, had earlier approached the victim, engaged her in conversation, and later contacted her again, asking her to bring him food.
When they met, he dragged the teenager into a secluded area, assaulted and threatened her, causing her to stop resisting out of fear for her family’s safety.
The victim later confided in a friend before lodging a police report, leading to Hazmi’s arrest and conviction under Section 376 of the Penal Code, which provides for lengthy imprisonment and whipping.
