An unemployed man received a three-month jail sentence from the Magistrate’s Court today for stealing a backpack during Friday prayers at a mosque. The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Nurul Izzah Shaharuddin to Ahmad Farizat Mohamed, 22, after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Ahmad Farizat was accused of stealing a backpack, which contained a laptop and RM70, from Ahmad Yakqub Abd Halim, 28. The theft occurred at the Ibnu Khaldun Mosque in Sungai Besi at 1:38 p.m. on July 5. The charge was framed under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which prescribes a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a fine, or both upon conviction.

The case facts revealed that Ahmad Yakqub was engaged in Friday prayers when he noticed his backpack, placed beside him, was missing. Following his arrest, Ahmad Farizat admitted to the theft. The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor R. Harvind, while Ahmad Farizat was represented by lawyer Nurdiyana Mustaza.

The incident has highlighted concerns about the safety of personal belongings in public spaces, even places of worship. While mosques are generally considered safe and sacred spaces, this case underscores the need for individuals to remain vigilant about their possessions.

The court's decision to impose a three-month sentence reflects a balance between punishment and the opportunity for rehabilitation. Ahmad Farizat’s guilty plea and the relatively short jail term suggest the court considered the circumstances surrounding his actions. However, the sentence also serves as a deterrent to others who might contemplate similar actions.

This case serves as a reminder of the legal consequences of theft and the importance of respecting others' property. It also calls for increased awareness and preventive measures to protect personal belongings in communal and public spaces. The collaboration between the police and the judicial system in swiftly addressing the crime underscores the importance of maintaining security and order in society.
