Videos have recently gone viral showing a driver in a four-wheel drive vehicle deliberately crashing into several smart parking barriers in the Perlis area. According to Utusan Malaysia, police have arrested a 62-year-old trader suspected of vandalism. He was detained in front of a bank along Jalan Raja Syed Alwi, Kangar, less than 24 hours after a report was lodged by a representative from the company managing the smart parking system. He damaged 3 parking barrier systems Kangar District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop, said investigations revealed that three units of the automated parking barrier system on Jalan Seruling were damaged. “A company technician confirmed the system was no longer functional. The last time the complainant saw the barriers in working condition was around 7pm on Saturday after a test run,” he said. Yusharifuddin mentioned that the damages are estimated at RM30,000. Police also seized several items from the suspect, including a Nissan Navara and its remote control. The suspect blamed the smart parking barriers for hurting his business Meanwhile, Harian Metro reported that the suspect admitted to committing the act because he was unhappy about the installation of the automated parking barrier system, which he believed caused a drop in his business and major financial losses. Yusharifuddin added that a remand application for the suspect will be made before the Kangar Magistrate’s Court on May 6, and the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code. After the incident, Edward Poh, CEO of the company managing the smart parking system, said they’ve stationed customer service agents at the parking sites to assist with any questions, and also set up a hotline for the public to reach out. “We hope incidents like this don’t happen again in the future, and we encourage the public to contact us if they have any questions about the paid parking system in Perlis,” he said.
