In Petaling Jaya, a significant meeting took place between Dr Tun Mahathir Mohamad and Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin. The meeting, which lasted for nearly two hours, was aimed at discussing the agenda of uniting the Malay community. This was confirmed by Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan, the chairman of the Malay Proclamation secretariat.
The primary objective of the meeting was to ensure the continuity of the struggle to empower the Malay community. Khairuddin stated that both leaders had put aside their political differences to promote the Malay Proclamation movement. This movement is a non-partisan initiative that welcomes any Malays who are enthusiastic about unity, irrespective of their political ideologies.
Khairuddin did not provide specific details about the topics discussed during the meeting between Mahathir and Muhyiddin. However, he emphasized that the Malay Proclamation movement is not based on party lines but solely on the struggle and spirit of the Malay community. The movement aims to discuss and resolve issues concerning the Malay community based on the rights of the Malays as enshrined in the Federal Constitution. Khairuddin assured that the movement would not allow any infringement upon the rights of other communities in the country in an unconstitutional manner.
Muhyiddin, who also serves as the Bersatu president, had previously expressed his willingness to collaborate with his former colleague-turned-rival, Dr Mahathir. This came after Dr Mahathir extended an olive branch to him. Muhyiddin acknowledged the recent political developments that have put the Malays and Muslims in the country at a challenging crossroads and welcomed Dr Mahathir's offer of cooperation.
Dr Mahathir and Muhyiddin co-founded Bersatu in 2016, and the party joined the Pakatan Harapan coalition, which subsequently came to federal power in the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018. However, their alliance was short-lived. The Pakatan government was brought down by the Sheraton Move in February 2020, which saw Muhyiddin taking the party out of the coalition, despite protests from Dr Mahathir.
Following this, Dr Mahathir resigned as the prime minister and Bersatu chairman and was expelled from the party three months later for not supporting the Muhyiddin-led Perikatan government. Both leaders then led rival coalitions that contested against each other in GE15, with Muhyiddin heading Perikatan and Dr Mahathir leading the now-defunct Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA).
