UniMAP organises Undi18-inspired programmes to prepare students for GE15

KANGAR – Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) has drawn up programmes to expose students with Undi18 to encourage them to vote in the 15th General Election and understand the country’s democratic and electoral systems, and political scenario.

Its vice-chancellor, Prof Zaliman Sauli said among the efforts undertaken this year was establishing the UniMAP Undi18 Secretariat (SU18) in collaboration with the university’s Rukun Negara Secretariat.

“The SU18 has the role of planning and implementing awareness activities related to Undi 18.

“UniMAP has organised the talk programme, ‘Wacana Minda UniMAP Siri 4: Bicara Anak Muda Undi 18’, for its new diploma students to instil awareness of Undi 18 and their responsibility as Malaysians in upholding the country’s parliamentary democracy.

“The university also held a workshop titled, ‘Bengkel Persidangan Mahasiswa UniMAP’, the Undi18 Altruistic Leadership seminar, Kembara Mahasiswa Negeri Perak and Sembang Santai Undi18 for its undergraduates from Kelantan.

“These proactive measures are aimed at producing students who are knowledgeable of the country’s democratic system,” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, UniMAP Students Representative Council president Ahmad Akif Syakirin Mohd Adnan said the efforts could promote interest among students to know about the country’s ongoing political developments.

“This is in line with the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 which allows undergraduates to be involved in political activities within and outside the campus.

“The public universities need to be more proactive in educating their students on the importance of going out to vote, especially with Undi18 taking off in the coming general election,” he said. – Bernama, August 17, 2022
