  • RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey has claimed that the £71,160 starting salary that the average Tube driver receives is insufficient to buy a house in London, despite acknowledging it as a good wage.
  • The statement was made during a week-long London Underground strike that has caused severe disruption across the capital and is estimated to cost London's economy at least £230m.
  • RMT members are striking over pay and working hours, also demanding a reduced four-day working week.
  • Transport for London (TfL) offered a 3.4 per cent pay rise, which was rejected, and said that the union's demand for a four-day week is unaffordable.
  • Mr Dempsey said: “We make no apology for fighting hard for our members, and that’s why our members have got good conditions.”
