Dear Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim,

I pen these words on behalf of all concerned Sarawakians, proud "citizens" of the Land of the Hornbill, untouched by the constant undercurrent of racial and religious politicking that often plagues the Malaysian peninsula.

In recent days, a message circulating on social media, attributed to a certain Mr. Francis from Kuching, has garnered significant attention.

It is a message that carries profound implications for our nation, and it is my hope that this message will serve as a call for unity rather than a harbinger of disintegration within the federation.

Mr. Prime Minister, it is essential to exercise caution when addressing issues of race, religion, and language in our multicultural nation. It is crucial to remember that Malaysia comprises not only the peninsular states but also the Borneo territories of Sabah and Sarawak.

Herein lies the crux of the matter: the beliefs, cultures, and priorities of those in Borneo differ significantly from those in Malaya. We must be attuned to these disparities and work tirelessly to bridge them, not exacerbate them.

The prospect of secession is a divisive notion that has been raised by some Sarawakians who feel that our nation's course no longer aligns with the ideals of unity and cooperation our forefathers envisioned when Malaysia was formed in 1963.

It is a stark reminder of the urgency with which we must address the concerns of those who believe they no longer find their place in the Malaysian federation.

The question that arises is whether we can find a solution that keeps our nation together rather than tear it apart. Is it possible to rekindle the spirit of unity that brought us together more than half a century ago?

We must remember that our diversity is our strength, and we should leverage it to build a nation where every citizen, regardless of their origins, can live happy, fulfilling, and meaningful lives. To this end, I implore you to consider ways to engage, understand, and accommodate the unique aspirations and needs of the people of Sabah and Sarawak.

Mr. Prime Minister, the appointment of a Premier in Sarawak, Abang Johari, signifies that our state seeks a measure of autonomy. We must address the legitimate concerns of Sarawakians, ensuring that they play a more active role in shaping their destiny within the federation.

Two prime ministers are a symbol of this growing autonomy, but they need not be a source of division. Instead, they can be a testament to our ability to adapt and accommodate the diverse needs and perspectives of our nation's regions.

In conclusion, let us use the discourse sparked by Mr. Francis's message as an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to a united, harmonious Malaysia.

We must recognize that our differences are assets, not liabilities, and that by working together, we can strengthen our federation.

The Borneo territories, particularly Sarawak, should remain an integral part of our shared identity and purpose.

It is my hope that you, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, will lead us down the path of unity, understanding, and collaboration, rather than division and discord.

Sincerely,

Mihar Dias
