With the rescue operation for the sinkhole victim in full swing, many have been questioning the history of Kuala Lumpur.

Following this, a letter that was thought to be written by a geologist named Sarah Jamal from Universiti Malaya (UM) has been widely circulating online and the institution has since issued an official response about it.

ICYMI, here’s what the letter was all about

Sarah Jamal, who was said to be a famous geologist from UM claimed that beneath the developed Kuala Lumpur City lies a huge cave, which was formed millions of years ago.

“This makes KL a city as a rooftop on a gigantic cave,” the letter claimed.

The letter also pointed out that the cave beneath KL consists of limestones that gradually eroded by the underground water, which formed a large cavity under the surface.

According to Sarah, it’s a rare phenomenon in KL and the letter also said that the underground cave has a unique ecosystem that has yet to be explored.

“At this time, there are still no signs of lives in the cave.”

Universiti Malaya releases an official statement

In an official statement by UM yesterday (August 26), the institution confirmed that there is no geologist named Sarah Jamal from Universiti Malaya.

Not only that but there is also no geologist with that name in the Department of Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG).

The fake name, however, is not the only hoax.

UM also confirmed that the content of the letter is fake and baseless, and assured the public that the geologists in UM are careful in making statements regarding the sinkhole incident.

“The rescue work is still ongoing, and the cause of the sinkhole is still unidentified.”

At times like this, we have to be careful with the information that is disseminated online. We hope the rescue work will be fruitful sooner, rather than later.
