A private university college vice-chancellor denies deceiving a former colleague over a lecturer’s appointment for a RM20,000 fee in Melaka

MELAKA: A vice-chancellor of a private university college pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of deceiving a former colleague.

G. Jayakumar, 64, is accused of deceiving the former vice-chancellor of Manipal University College Malaysia to appoint a lecturer for a RM20,000 fee.

The charge states he appointed a lecturer from another private university as chief consultant for a curriculum development programme.

This was allegedly done despite knowing the appointment conflicted with his service contract and university regulations.

The offence was allegedly committed at the university here on May 3, 2021.

He was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum five-year jail term, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharina Farhana Nor Sa’ari proposed bail of RM20,000 with one surety.

She also requested the accused report monthly to the Melaka Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office.

Defence lawyer Azrul Zulkifli Stork did not object to the prosecution’s proposed conditions.

Judge Elesabet Paya Wan allowed bail at RM20,000 with one surety and the additional reporting condition.

The court set March 9 for the next mention of the case.
