
PENAMPANG: University students play a crucial role in shaping Malaysia’s future by embracing the nation’s diversity as a strength, said Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick.
Closing the Sukarelawan Siswa Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswi (YSS) Mission to Sabah 2024 programme, he highlighted the importance of mutual respect and tolerance in strengthening inter-racial relationships within Malaysia’s multicultural society.
The Student Volunteer Mission Programme, according to Ewon, serves as a vital platform for students nationwide to immerse themselves in the varied customs, cultures, and religions of Malaysia’s diverse communities.
“This programme brings young university students to selected villages, allowing them to experience firsthand the rich cultural heritage, languages and traditions that form the fabric of our nation,” he said.

Read more Ewon, who is Penampang Member of Parliament and Kadamaian Assemblyman, expressed confidence that participants would emerge as agents of unity, integration, diplomacy, and tolerance for Malaysia.
He emphasised the responsibility of students, as future leaders, to cultivate high levels of tolerance to maintain the country’s unity and harmony.
He praised the programme’s success in not only promoting volunteerism but also fostering national integration among students from various regions, including Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
He commended the YSS and participating students for their efforts in Kadamaian and Penampang, viewing it as a fulfilment of his commitment to bring government services to these areas through various ministries and agencies.
“This is my big commitment to both areas I represent to bring in government services through various ministries and agencies.
“This mission is not only important for building a spirit of volunteerism and fostering a community spirit among students, but more importantly, they can get to know the cultures and customs of various races in Malaysia and thus build a spirit of mutual respect and tolerance.
“We will celebrate the 61st anniversary of the formation of Malaysia this year, so it is important for young people on campuses to be aware of, respect and tolerate the diversity of the people.
“The future of this country depends a lot on how much young people accept this diversity and pluralism as a strength,” he said.
