A 59-YEAR-OLD man offering unlicensed transportation services to international travellers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 has been arrested, following a sting operation by the Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) on Thursday.
The individual was caught attempting to solicit six Belgian tourists for an unauthorised ride to Kuala Lumpur in a Toyota Vellfire, charging a fare of RM225 to be paid upon arrival.
According to Selangor JPJ Director Azrin Borhan, preliminary investigations revealed the man had been actively involved in illegal touting activities at the airport since 2022.
“The driver admitted to persuading, coaxing and offering transport services to the Belgian passengers,” Azrin said on Sunday. “He claimed to be doing this for side income.”
JPJ officers have since seized the suspect’s vehicle. Although his driving licence remains valid, he now faces possible prosecution under Section 205(1) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, which carries penalties of up to RM50,000 in fines, imprisonment for up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
Azrin added that individuals found to be aiding or abetting such illegal activity could also be charged under Section 243(1) of the same act.
He urged the public to refrain from engaging with unauthorised transport providers, especially at the airport, and instead utilise officially registered services either via designated airport counters or reputable e-hailing applications.
