In a recent parliamentary update, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail shed light on the ongoing investigation into the case involving an improvised explosive device (IED) discovered under the car of renowned lawyer and activist Siti Kasim. The incident, which unfolded on July 21, has prompted intensified efforts by law enforcement to trace the suspects and determine the motive behind this alarming attack.

Saifuddin affirmed that the investigation is being conducted under Section 7 of the Explosives Act 1957, emphasizing the commitment of the police in thoroughly examining every lead. Responding to a parliamentary query from Sim Tze Tzin (Bayan Baru-PH), the Home Minister stated that the probe is still in progress, and the investigation papers have been forwarded to the deputy public prosecutor for further scrutiny.

The case first came to public attention when Siti Kasim, also known as Siti Zabedah Kasim, disclosed the shocking discovery of a bomb-like object beneath her car during a routine service. Subsequent confirmation by Brickfields police chief Amihizam Abdul Shukor verified the object as an IED, sparking immediate concerns about the safety of the activist.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain later confirmed on July 24 that the planted IED was intended as part of a sinister murder attempt on Siti Kasim's life. The revelation sent shockwaves through the community and raised questions about the potential motives behind such a targeted attack on a prominent figure known for her advocacy work.

However, despite these initial revelations, the investigation encountered obstacles. Former Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, currently heading Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department, announced on August 14 that the inquiry faced challenges as CCTV footage yielded no substantial leads on potential suspects. This development added a layer of complexity to an already perplexing case, leaving investigators to explore alternative avenues to solve the mystery.

Saifuddin, in his parliamentary response, acknowledged the complexity of the case but assured that the police were diligently pursuing all available leads. The commitment to uncover the truth behind this brazen attack remains unwavering, with law enforcement grappling with the intricate web of clues and information surrounding the incident.

The Home Minister's update also shed light on the broader landscape of threats involving explosives in Malaysia. According to Saifuddin, authorities have investigated over 17 cases of such threats against individuals or organizations between 2019 and October of the current year. This revelation underscores the need for heightened vigilance and robust security measures to safeguard individuals who find themselves at the forefront of advocacy and activism.

As the investigation into the attack on Siti Kasim continues, the public remains on edge, eagerly awaiting updates on the progress and hoping for a resolution that brings the perpetrators to justice. The case not only underscores the challenges faced by activists in Malaysia but also raises broader concerns about the safety and security of those who dare to speak out against injustice. The pursuit of truth in this matter serves as a testament to the resilience of the legal and law enforcement systems in the face of such threats, emphasizing the collective determination to uphold justice and protect those who champion it.
