In a surprising turn of events, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Adam claimed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim played a crucial role in expediting the pardon hearing of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. This revelation came to light following a three-hour emergency meeting convened by Umno's top leadership to discuss the Federal Territories Pardons Board's decision to grant Najib only a partial pardon.

Despite expressing disappointment over the board's decision to commute Najib's prison sentence rather than grant a full pardon, Umno leaders issued a statement asserting their acceptance of the ruling. Simultaneously, they made it clear that their fight to secure Najib's freedom would persist.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Lokman expressed gratitude to the prime minister, highlighting the unusual speed with which Najib's pardon petition was heard. According to Lokman, the customary procedure dictates that a pardon petition can only be considered by the Pardons Board after the petitioner has served one-third of their sentence. However, in Najib's case, the petition was expedited, thanks to efforts initiated by the president and endorsed by the prime minister, allowing it to be heard early by the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Najib commenced his prison term in August 2022, with the original prospect of early release not anticipated until after 2030. The recent decision by the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced a reduction in Najib's 12-year sentence for misappropriating RM42 million from a former 1MDB unit. The prison term was halved, and the fine was slashed from RM210 million to RM50 million. Consequently, Najib, initially expected to be released by 2028, might secure an even earlier release, eligible for parole on good behavior after completing two-thirds of the six-year term.

The official statement from the Federal Territories Pardons Board, represented by the Prime Minister's Department's Legal Affairs Division as the board's secretariat, clarified that the decision was reached during the January 29 meeting of the Pardons Board for the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya.

As this revelation adds a layer of complexity to an already intricate political landscape, questions arise about the motivations behind Anwar Ibrahim's alleged involvement in fast-tracking Najib Razak's pardon. The dynamics within Umno, the historical rivalry between Anwar and Najib, and the implications on Malaysia's political trajectory warrant close scrutiny.

Observers note that this development could potentially influence public perception, raising concerns about the integrity of the justice system and political maneuvering within the country. The interplay between political figures and legal processes invites skepticism and underscores the need for transparency and accountability in Malaysia's governance. As the story unfolds, it promises to be a pivotal moment in the ongoing narrative of Malaysian politics, with far-reaching implications for the nation's future.
