In a groundbreaking move to curb illicit activities, the Immigration Department has successfully dismantled a sophisticated prostitution ring during a special operation that unfolded across five premises in Ipoh. The extensive operation, carried out at two prostitution dens and three entertainment outlets on January 12, resulted in the apprehension of a staggering 141 individuals.

Jafri Embok Taha, the Immigration Department's deputy director-general (operations), divulged that the detainees comprised 117 foreign women and 13 men of diverse nationalities, ranging from 18 to 36 years old, including one stateless man. Additionally, seven local men and three local women, aged between 35 and 44, suspected to be caretakers of the premises, were also taken into custody. The revelation occurred at a press conference held at the state Home Affairs Ministry Complex in Meru Raya on January 13.

The operation yielded a plethora of confiscated items, underscoring the magnitude of the illicit activities. Among the seized items were condoms, sex toys, various documents, business records, keys, closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) equipment, mobile phones, passports, and approximately RM14,155 in cash.

Jafri outlined the intricate modus operandi employed by the syndicate at the two prostitution dens. The group utilized platforms such as Telegram and WhatsApp to showcase photographs of foreign women. Prospective customers, upon selection, would then be ushered into dedicated rooms. The fees levied at these premises ranged from RM200 to RM500. In the case of outcall services, customers were charged between RM800 and RM1,000. Payments were accepted in cash or through online transactions before the women were dispatched to the customers.

The other three entertainment establishments, according to Jafri, targeted a clientele who made reservations via phone calls. Room reservations came at a price, ranging between RM800 and RM10,000, contingent on the category of the room. Women offering services at these venues charged RM150 for a one-hour session. The syndicate had been operational for a year, raking in a monthly profit of about RM24,000.

The raid faced resistance from some customers who attempted to hinder the search by creating disturbances. However, the enforcement team adeptly thwarted their attempts, ensuring a successful operation.

Jafri disclosed that the foreign nationals were arrested on suspicion of violating the Immigration Act, the Passport Act, and the Immigration Regulations. They were subsequently taken to the state Immigration Department headquarters at the Home Affairs Ministry Complex for further legal action. The seven local men and three local women faced charges under Section 56(11) of the Immigration Act. Additionally, notifications were issued to 69 local men, two Bangladesh nationals, and a local woman, urging them to come forward to assist in ongoing investigations.

The successful dismantling of this intricate network serves as a testament to the Immigration Department's commitment to eradicating illicit activities and upholding the rule of law in the region. The operation underscores the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of communities.
