Malaysian woman pays tribute to FDS crash victims as “unsung heroes”, honouring their service to remote Sarawak communities
A MALAYSIAN woman has described the Flying Doctors Service (FDS) team killed in a helicopter crash in Sarawak as “unsung heroes”, saying their service to remote communities should not be forgotten.
In a Threads post titled “Gone but never forgotten”, she said the tragedy had left communities across Sarawak and Malaysians elsewhere mourning the loss of the healthcare workers and pilot.
“Do you know why an entire Sarawak is mourning the loss of the FDS team? Maybe it’s not just Sarawak. Maybe the entire Malaysia is grieving with us,” she wrote.
She said members of the FDS team understood the risks involved in flying to remote areas but continued their work because people living in the interior depended on them.
“They knew that flying into remote areas was never without danger. Yet, they still chose to go because there were people in the interior who needed them,” she said.
She highlighted the challenges faced by communities in remote parts of Sarawak, where some villages are located deep in forests and far from towns and healthcare facilities.
“Some are deep in the forests, where reaching a clinic or hospital is not as simple as getting into a car and driving there. That is why the FDS is so important,” she wrote.
She said the service brought medical care to people who might otherwise have to travel for hours or longer to reach healthcare facilities.
“Behind every flight were people who were simply doing their jobs, but to the communities they served, they were so much more than that. They were the people who came when help was far away.
“They were the hope that arrived from the sky,” she added.
The woman paid tribute to those who lost their lives, including the pilot, Captain Zainol Afiq Bee Sham.
“It hurts knowing that some of these heroes will never fly again. To the FDS team who lost their lives, including the captain who flew the helicopter many times, thank you for choosing to serve even when you knew the risks,” she wrote.
“Your work may not always have made the headlines, but the lives you touched mattered. You were the unsung heroes who carried help into the heart of Sarawak.
“Rest in peace. Your service will not be forgotten.”
The post drew emotional responses from other users.
One said she had “cried so hard” over the tragedy, while another wrote: “Even the sky mourns with us.”
Another netizen expressed hope that the government would improve road access to remote communities so residents could also reach healthcare facilities and other essential services by land.
The four healthcare workers and their pilot died after a Flying Doctors Service helicopter carrying a Ministry of Health team crashed and caught fire near the end of the Long Lellang Short Take-Off and Landing Airport (STOLport) in Ulu Baram on Sept 8.
The victims were Medical Officer Dr Ainul Baraah Kamarudin, nurses Debra anak Moset and Jessie Paya Jok, Assistant Medical Officer Alexson Adit anak Henry, and pilot Captain Zainol Afiq Bee Sham.
