Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has strongly criticized those questioning the government's decision to assist in rebuilding Gaza, arguing that such a stance contradicts Islamic teachings and humanitarian values.
Recently, Anwar announced Malaysia’s commitment to constructing a hospital, mosque, and school in Gaza as part of efforts to support Palestinians affected by the ongoing conflict. While many welcomed this initiative, it also sparked debate, with notable figures like former International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz urging the government to focus on domestic concerns first.
Addressing these criticisms, Anwar took to his official Facebook page to defend Malaysia’s decision. He pointed out that certain individuals seem to challenge every government move, regardless of its purpose. Speaking at a community gathering in Ipoh before Friday prayers at Al-Muttaqin Mosque, he questioned the logic of those who believe Malaysia should not extend aid to Gaza while still facing local challenges.
“One group dismisses this as mere theatrics. This effort involves hundreds of millions. Then, there are so-called intelligent individuals, former leaders, who argue that we haven’t even resolved our own school issues, yet we are helping others. What kind of mindset is this?” Anwar stated.
He emphasized that Islam encourages helping those in need, particularly fellow Muslims, within one’s capacity. Highlighting the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, he reminded critics that the region has suffered some of the worst devastation since World War II, with schools, hospitals, and homes completely destroyed.
“Children, women, schools—everything has been wiped out. And when we try to offer assistance, some people respond by saying we should fix our own problems first. Brothers and sisters, until the end of time, domestic issues will never be fully resolved” he argued.
Anwar stressed that no country ever reaches a point where every internal issue is fully addressed. While acknowledging that Malaysia has its own struggles, he maintained that this should not prevent the nation from extending a helping hand to others facing extreme hardship.
His remarks underline the government’s commitment to balancing domestic priorities while upholding its moral responsibility to support humanitarian causes globally.
