As the year winds down, forget the hustle and bustle of crowded tourist spots and embark on an enchanting road trip around Peninsular Malaysia for the ultimate #cuticutilocal celebration. (My op Ed column today is inspired by an article from Sinar Daily recently).
It's true, beyond the well-trodden paths of cities like George Town and Melaka, there's a tapestry of smaller towns and villages waiting to be uncovered this coming end of year school vacation.
- Bentong, Pahang: Venture beyond the familiar attractions and discover Bentong's world famous durian orchards, captivating waterfalls, and a laid-back old town oozing with character. Don't miss the Bentong Morning Market's vibrant atmosphere and make sure to bring back souvenirs like Bentong's famous ginger, soy sauce, and durian snacks. By the way, Bentong is only about 90 minutes by car from Kuala Lumpur.
- Rompin, Pahang: For the adventurous at heart, Rompin beckons with natural wonders – from waterfalls to orang asli villages. Explore off-the-beaten paths, soak in the sun on pristine beaches, and be mesmerized by the clear blue waters of Tasik Biru in Bukit Ibam. Rompin's proximity to the Endau-Rompin National Park promises an encounter with Malaysia's rich biodiversity.
- Kluang, Johor: Embrace the suggestion for a road trip to Kluang, where Malaysia's largest organic farms await. From conquering hills to exploring a coffee powder factory and admiring colorful murals, Kluang offers a blend of nature and culture. Start your day with aromatic Kluang coffee and kaya toast at a historic kopitiam which have spawned a national franchise chain by the same name.
- Gopeng, Perak: Step into Gopeng, a former tin mining town, for a laid-back vibe and nature exploration. White water rafting at the Kampar River, hiking Bukit Batu Putih, and exploring the 400-million-year-old Gua Tempurung provide an adrenaline rush. History enthusiasts can delve into the town's past at the Gopeng Museum, and glamping sites offer a unique camping experience.
- Teluk Intan, Perak: Transport yourself to the days of old in Teluk Intan, home to Malaysia's own Leaning Tower of Pisa. Indulge in a foodie adventure with nasi kandar, rojak, and Chinese pastries. The Glutton Square food court, a local favourite for almost six decades, beckons with a refreshing bowl of ais kacang.
- Kangar, Perlis: Experience the charming old town vibe of Kangar, the capital of Perlis, often overlooked as a transit station. Surrounded by vast fields and farms, Kangar offers a sunflower field, a petting zoo, and a reptile conservatory. Capture aesthetic photos amid rows of sunflowers and immerse yourself in the local charm.
This holiday season, dive into the heart of Malaysia's lesser-known gems. The joy of discovery, coupled with the rich tapestry of cultures, makes this road trip an unforgettable celebration of local wonders. #Cuticutilocal and explore the beauty that lies off the beaten track.
Where to stay? Most of these towns have a wide selection of hotels and pleasant home stays to choose from. Do book in advance to avoid disappointment. They are usually full during end of year school holidays.
