The consolidation of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) will be conducted in adherence to existing legal frameworks, emphasized by PDP's president, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
During a recent visit to PSB president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh's residence for Chinese New Year, Tiong King Sing, who also serves as the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, underscored that this merger would not necessitate any by-elections in Sarawak. He debunked speculations suggesting otherwise, stating firmly, "How can it trigger (by-elections)? It will not trigger any by-elections. We must do it in accordance with existing laws."
Responding to queries regarding the specifics of the merger, Tiong King Sing assured that the media would be promptly informed once the merger process advances.
PBS, an opposition party that secured three state seats in the 12th Sarawak state elections held in 2021, declared its support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg on July 13 of the previous year.
PDP, as part of the ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), joins forces with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP).
This impending merger between PDP and PSB signals a significant shift in Sarawak's political landscape. As stakeholders await further developments, the adherence to legal procedures underscores the commitment to transparency and adherence to democratic principles.
The merger not triggering any by-elections allays concerns and ensures political stability during the transition period. It also reflects the parties' intent to prioritize governance and avoid unnecessary disruptions to Sarawak's legislative process.
Furthermore, the alignment of PBS with the ruling coalition hints at potential realignments and alliances within the state's political sphere. Such shifts could have implications for future policy decisions and the distribution of power within Sarawak's government structure.
As the merger progresses, stakeholders will keenly observe how it shapes the political dynamics and impacts Sarawak's socio-economic landscape. Transparency and adherence to legal procedures will be paramount in maintaining public trust and confidence in the political process.
