In a recent turn of events, Zaid Ibrahim, former lawyer to Datuk Seri Najib Razak, has urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to shed light on the secretive process of the Pardons Board. Zaid, who emphasized the need for transparency, questioned the confidentiality surrounding the decision-making, expressing concerns about the lack of public awareness regarding the members and proceedings of the board.
Speaking at the launch of Tan Sri Shahrir Samad's books, "Dendam Orang Menang" (Vengeance of the Winners) and "Keputusan Akhir" (Final Decision), Zaid Ibrahim highlighted the importance of understanding the rationale behind the Pardons Board's decision, especially in the case of Najib Razak. He argued that the public's respect for the process could only be achieved if they were informed about the details of what transpired during the decision-making.
Zaid drew attention to conflicting statements made by various officials regarding the decision-making process. While Federal Territory Minister Dr. Zaliha Mustafa asserted that the decision was a collective one, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution revealed that there was a brief discussion by the Cabinet before the Pardons Board's decision. Zaid questioned the Unity Government's stance and sought clarity on Umno's position in influencing the decision.
According to Zaid, the pardon granted to Najib should have been based on his contributions to the country. He argued that the lack of transparency in such matters could lead to public dissatisfaction and anger, emphasizing the need for openness in the decision-making process.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the Pardons Board's decision, Zaid criticized the attempt to appease everyone, resulting in an outcome that left no party content. He suggested that the principle of the application should have been followed – a straightforward 'yes' or 'no' in response to Najib's plea for a full pardon or a reduction in his sentence.
On February 2, the Pardons Board announced its decision to commute Najib Razak's jail term from 12 years to six, with a release date set for August 23, 2028, and a reduced fine of RM50 million from RM210 million. The board stated that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional year added to the jail term, extending the release date to August 23, 2029.
In conclusion, Zaid Ibrahim's call for transparency in the Pardons Board's decision-making process echoes the sentiment of many concerned citizens. As the public seeks answers regarding the influential factors behind such decisions, the importance of an open and accountable system becomes paramount in maintaining trust and confidence in the nation's governance. The call for clarity in Najib Razak's case highlights the broader need for transparency in all matters of public interest, emphasizing the significance of an informed and engaged citizenry.
