Volvo says the switch to 800V also reduces heat generation during charging and allows thinner electrical wiring to be used, reducing material use and vehicle weight while improving efficiency.
VOLVO Car Malaysia has confirmed that the updated 2026 Volvo EX90 will be launched here soon. For us, the biggest change is the move from the current model’s 400-volt architecture to a new 800-volt electrical system.
For the Malaysian car, Volvo has confirmed a Twin Motor all-wheel-drive setup producing 680 PS and 870 Nm, with 0-100 km/h taking 4.2 seconds.
The 800V architecture also brings significantly faster charging. Updated EX90 models offered overseas support DC charging at up to 350kW, compared with 250kW for the existing Malaysian model. Volvo says up to 250km of range can be added in 10 minutes under suitable conditions, while overseas specifications quote a 10% to 80% charge time of around 22 minutes.
By comparison, the current Malaysian EX90 requires around 30 minutes for a 10% to 80% charge at up to 250kW, with Volvo quoting up to 623km of WLTP range.

Beyond the powertrain, the updated EX90 also receives a more powerful core computer based on dual NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin processors. Volvo says the setup provides around 500 TOPS of computing performance and enables new or improved safety and driver assistance functions through software updates.
These include connected alerts for slippery roads, hazards and accidents ahead, expanded automatic emergency steering functionality in darkness and improvements to parking assistance.
Emergency Stop Assist can also bring the vehicle to a controlled stop if the driver fails to respond to warnings, with automatic emergency calling available in supported markets.
Volvo Car Malaysia’s announcement does not yet confirm the final Malaysian specification, battery capacity, driving range, pricing or whether the updated EX90 will continue to be imported or switch to local assembly.
Registrations of interest are already open, with Volvo Car Malaysia saying the first 100 customers to place an order will receive special early-bird rewards, although details have yet to be announced.
For reference, the current EX90 Twin Motor Performance Ultra is priced at RM442,888 in Malaysia. It uses a 111kWh battery, produces 517PS and 910Nm, offers up to 623km of WLTP range and supports DC charging at up to 250kW.
