KUALA LUMPUR – A gas compressor explosion at a private university in Bukit Damansara left nine people injured, including four students, earlier today.

The explosion occurred at approximately 11:40 AM, according to Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Fadil Marsus.

In addition to the students, the other injured victims included two contractor workers, a staff member from the management, and two foreign nationals working at the cafeteria.

All the victims were taken to nearby hospitals, including University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM), Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL), and Sungai Buloh Hospital.

"We are fortunate that the area wasn't crowded with students at the time of the incident, likely due to the ongoing holiday period," Fadil said.

"At this stage, the scene has been confirmed safe, and investigations are ongoing," he added, as reported by Buletin TV3.

Fadil mentioned that some victims suffered burns and partial burns from debris caused by the powerful explosion, which also caused structural damage to the building's walls.

Currently, the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) along with the Hazmat Unit is conducting safety checks to ensure no further explosion risks.

A total of 38 fire officers, including forensic and Hazmat teams, are involved in today’s operation. – January 12, 2025
