[UPDATED] Explain Zahid’s discharge or we’ll deny govt two-thirds majority: Muda

PETALING JAYA – Muda today urged the Attorney-General’s Chambers to provide a detailed explanation behind the discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) granted by the courts to Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Its president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the party would not hesitate to withdraw support for the unity government and deny them a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat in the absence of such clarification.

According to reports in Malaysiakini, he also said the party is considering a street protest, as the DNAA granted to Zahid was “one of the biggest red lines crossed”.

“Muda has since launched a protest campaign on social media, as well as a ‘Kempen Dakwa Zahid’, which is based on three claims.

“We demand that those claims be fulfilled.

“If those claims are not fulfilled, we will take action as a party,” he said at a press conference at Muda’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration came into power in November with 148 MPs on the government bench, just enough for a two-thirds majority that should, in theory, allow the government to amend the federal constitution.

The 148 include Syed Saddiq, who is Muar MP.

At present, however, the government has 147 MPs after the Pulai seat fell vacant.

If Amanah wrests back the Pulai seat on Saturday, this would have given the government 148 MPs again.

However, if Muda follows through with its threat today, the government will be back to 147 MPs.

On the three claims demanded by Muda through “Kempen Dakwa Zahid”, its secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi said the AGC must provide an explanation of the DNAA granted to Zahid during the parliamentary sitting, which will reconvene next week.

He said that it should be done in such a manner, and not through a press statement, to allow the matter to be debated.

“Secondly, we also demand the separation of the public prosecutor’s office from the AGC immediately to ensure that there is no interference from the executive arm in any court case.

“We also ask for the government to provide a timeline on when this can be implemented.

“Thirdly, we urge the public prosecutor to charge Zahid in court immediately.

“We also urge that no other cases involving the people’s money should be dropped, unlike what had happened in Zahid’s case.

“We also stress that the Muda president’s case should not be dropped…he (Syed Saddiq) has concluded his defence and is just waiting for the verdict.” – The Vibes, September 5, 2023
