[UPDATED] GE15: Warisan confirms ex-MCA chief Ong Tee Keat for Pandan seat

AMPANG – Former MCA president Tan Sri Ong Tee Keat was today confirmed as Warisan’s candidate for the Pandan parliamentary seat in the coming general election (GE15).

His candidacy was announced today by party president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who also said Warisan would contest 25 parliamentary seats in Peninsular Malaysia with the possibility of more.

“Voters must know that they have a choice to vote for a party that does not base itself around racial or religious issues,” Ong said.

“I have always admired and wanted to emulate the Bornean culture where people of all races can live together peacefully.

“If they can do it, why can’t we in Peninsular Malaysia do the same?”

A former transport minister, Ong was previously Pandan MP for two terms before being dropped as a candidate for MCA in the 2013 general election, after losing the MCA presidential election in 2010.

MCA subsequently lost the Pandan seat to PKR’s Rafizi Ramli in the 2013 polls.

The PKR deputy president is set to contest in the constituency again, with incumbent Pandan MP Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail heading to Bandar Tun Razak instead.

On October 29, The Vibes reported that Ong will be making his political comeback after a 10-year hiatus, choosing to go with Warisan as he said the party gave him a platform to champion principles such as anti-corruption.

Other notable candidates unveiled today include former Jelutong MP Ooi Chuan Aun – better known as Jeff Ooi – who will be fielded in Bayan Baru.

Another old name in politics, former Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong, who secured the seat in the 2008 polls under the PKR banner, will now be contesting for Warisan in GE15.

Wee had also been the Bukit Bintang MP following the 2004 general election, during which he had contested as a candidate from the Malaysian Democratic Party, which he formed after being expelled from DAP.

At a press conference later, Shafie said the final list of parliamentary and state candidates is still undergoing finetuning, such as for the Arau seat, which Warisan will contest but did not name a candidate today.

In a dig at other political parties, Shafie said Warisan did not face any issues in choosing its GE15 candidates.

“Warisan has no problems (in deciding) who will contest where. We focus more on (choosing) which seats we should contest,” he said.

The parliamentary candidates announced today were for seats in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Kelantan, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan and Johor. Candidates were also announced for state seats in Perlis and Perak. – The Vibes, November 1, 2022
