[UPDATED] Govt announces unlimited data plan at RM69 per month for B40, PwD

KUALA LUMPUR – The federal government has announced an internet package with unlimited data for lower-income people and other groups for only RM69 per month.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the Fixed Internet Broadband package, as it is so named, has been created in line with the unity government’s commitment to lower the living costs.

He said it is targeted to help the B40 group, veterans, people with disabilities, and senior citizens with data service at a lower price.

“This package offers service with speed of up to 30mbps together with unlimited data at a price of only RM69 per month and will first be offered in March 2023 with a 24-month subscription contract.

“The package price offered is 22% cheaper than the price of current packages with the same specifications which is around RM89, which means that people can get to enjoy savings of RM480 throughout the contract period,” he said in a statement.

This package is made possible in cooperation with fixed broadband service providers namely Telekom Malaysia, CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, YTL, TIME Bhd and Astro, he added.

It had earlier been reported that the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Mentek had been directed to hold negotiations with the relevant parties concerning the package.

“This initiative is not only in line with the desire to ease the burden of the people, but also an indicator that the unity government and service providers are attentive to the people’s needs and welfare and will continue to work towards ensuring more comprehensive digital connectivity with lower prices in line with the Malaysia Madani concept,” Fahmi said.

Prior to this, Fahmi had unveiled the portable Unity Package internet prepaid data plan, which is two times cheaper at RM5 per month but is three times faster and is scheduled to hit the market this month.

He said that telecommunications service providers played an important role in completing internet connectivity for the 3% of areas yet to have access and the remaining 97% detected with “potholes”. – The Vibes, February 2, 2023
