KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested 46 individuals in Johor linked to illegal betting and gambling syndicates for the ongoing Qatar World Cup.
In a statement, authorities said they carried out 45 raids all over the state between November 21 to December 6, and have confiscated around RM 6,317,498 in credit value, RM 34,303 in cash, 48 mobile phones and memo pads containing World Cup bets.
At the same time, the Klang Utara police had detained five individuals suspected of being bookies for the World Cup.
Klang Utara district police chief S. Vijaya Rao said the suspects, who were in their 20s and 30s, were arrested in five raids since the World Cup began.
Police seized a computer, modem, five mobile phones and the World Cup schedule, suspected to have been used in part of the gambling syndicate.
Both of the arrests in Johor and Klang Utara were part of the Ops Soga IX that has been carried out by the Royal Malaysian Police aimed at curbing the gambling fiasco that occurs during international tournaments.
Those arrested will be investigated under the Betting Act 1953 and the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
Previously, the police confiscated over RM3 million in connections with illegal gambling and betting syndicates linked to the World Cup from across the country.
