A woman, who had been eying her husband’s insurance money for a long time, did the unthinkable by banding together with her lover to murder him so that they could “inherit” the insurance payout.

Unfortunately, their plot didn’t quite go according to plan as the victim survived the incident and the duo were eventually arrested, reported NST.

Held down while being smothered

According to Seri Alam district police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak, he said the victim recounted in a police reported lodged on Dec 22 that the incident took place at his home in Taman Ehsan Jaya.

Investigations showed that the victim’s wife had allowed her boyfriend to enter the house while the victim was asleep.

The victim had his legs being held down by the boyfriend while his wife covered his face in an attempt to choke him to death.

Fortunately, the victim managed to break free and his wife’s boyfriend fled the scene.

Wife asked about savings, insurance policies

Mohd Sohaimi added that prior to the attempted murder, the victim’s wife had asked him multiple times regarding his savings and insurance policies.

The two suspects were later arrested on Dec 23 by the Seri Alam police Criminal Investigation Division thanks to a police tip-off.

Pleaded not guilty

At the Johor Bahru Sessions Court today, the accused, N. Egavalli and R. Kamala Sarna, claimed trial to the charge of attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which was read together with Section 34 of the same Code.

Deputy public prosecutor R. Nevina urged the court to not grant bail given the severity of the crime.

National Legal Aid Foundation counsel K. Bharathi asked for bail, saying that Egavalli needed to care for her two non-verbal autistic children and added she didn’t pose the risk of absconding.

The court was also informed that Kamala Sarna has a child and a wife who works as a nurse at a private hospital and earns RM7,000.

Judge Mohd Zamir Suhaimee allowed bail at RM20,000 with two sureties each. He also ordered the accused to surrender their passports and report to the nearest police station monthly.

The court also instructed them not to interfere with the victim or prosecution witnesses and set Feb 3 for mention pending the submission of documents.
