TAWAU: The district endured three natural disasters within 17 hours on Thursday, beginning with tremors from a 4.8-magnitude earthquake at 6.37pm, followed by a midnight thunderstorm and morning floods triggered by the Northeast Monsoon.

The tremor, originating 24km southeast of Tarakan in North Kalimantan, caused no damage or emergency calls, according to Tawau Fire and Rescue Station and district police.

However, the Fire and Rescue Department responded to four weather-related incidents — a house collapse in Kampung Hidayat Batu 4, a fallen tree in town, and two flood rescues at Kampung Blok 31 and Kampung Sungai Gading.

A man suffered a broken leg in the house collapse and was treated at the scene by Civil Defence personnel before being taken to hospital, while several families were relocated to safer areas after floodwaters rose overnight.

District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin confirmed no earthquake-related emergencies were reported and urged residents to stay alert and seek help promptly during adverse weather.
