As the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) prepares to commemorate its 217th anniversary, it reflects on its journey filled with challenges and triumphs in upholding peace and order across the nation. Since its establishment with the introduction of the Charter of Justice in Penang on March 25, 1807, the PDRM has undergone remarkable transformations, evolving its image and duties to effectively address security threats and maintain its esteemed position among global police forces.
Despite the emergence of modern-day challenges, such as cybercrime, the PDRM remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding society, leveraging the expertise and adaptability of its officers to counter evolving threats. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain acknowledges the unique challenges posed by technological advancements, emphasizing the importance of equipping officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to combat contemporary crimes.
To meet these challenges, the PDRM prioritizes continuous training and education, covering areas such as law, sociology, psychology, criminal analysis, and professional ethics. Moreover, the force embraces technological innovations, including the use of body-worn cameras, data analytics platforms, and mobile apps like Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) to enhance service delivery and public trust.
However, the IGP also recognizes the imperative of addressing integrity issues within the force, acknowledging the impact of misconduct on public trust. While only a small fraction of personnel engage in such behavior, Razarudin emphasizes the importance of maintaining transparency, accountability, and effective communication to rebuild trust with the community.
Looking ahead, the PDRM aims to strengthen its relationship with the public through various initiatives, including security awareness programs, dialogue sessions, and collaborative projects. By fostering positive interactions and emphasizing cultural sensitivity, human rights, and ethical conduct, the force seeks to project a positive image as a trustworthy guardian of public safety.
As the nation prepares to celebrate the 217th Police Day, Razarudin urges all PDRM personnel to uphold the values of integrity and dedication, reaffirming their commitment to serving the country and its people. With a collective effort to uphold these principles, the PDRM aims to continue its noble mission of safeguarding society and promoting harmony within the community.
