Upko Sec-Gen Nelson sworn in as Senator

Kuala Lumpur: United Kinabalu Progressive Organisation (Upko) Secretary-General Datuk Nelson Angang was sworn in as a member of Dewan Negara (Senator) here, Thursday, effective May 16 until May 15, 2027.

He took the oath in front of Deputy President Senator Datuk Nur Jazlan Tan Sri Mohamed.

Nelson, who is also Upko Beaufort division head, is a former magistrate and now a legal practitioner with his own law firm.

He was Chairman of Saham Amanah Sabah (SAS) and is Deputy President of the Sabah Rugby Union.

Ewon expressed appreciation to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Sultan Iskandar, for approving the appointment of a Senator from Upko, and thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for agreeing to the appointment.

“I hope Upko’s voice will be louder in Parliament after this and also the service to the people, especially in Sabah, can be further strengthened through the appointment of Nelson.

“I will continue to ensure that the continuation of this party’s struggle is relevant at all times,” he said.

Nelson, when met after the swearing-in, expressed appreciation to Ewon who suggested him to become a Senator.

“I will shoulder this great responsibility as best as I can, not only bringing various issues raised by the people of Sabah but also national issues that need to be brought up in the Dewan Negara,” he said.
