UPSI student drowns in Sungai Bernam current

A 23-year-old UPSI student drowned after being swept away by a strong current while swimming with friends in Sungai Bernam near Tanjong Malim.

TANJONG MALIM: A Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student drowned after being caught in a strong current while swimming in Sungai Bernam.

The Perak Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 6.57 pm regarding the incident involving 23-year-old Muhammad Afiq Aizat Muhd Shukri.

According to the victim’s friends, all three were swept about 10 metres from their original swimming spot. Muhammad Afiq was reportedly dragged into a deep pool, while his two companions managed to reach shallower water and save themselves.

Members of the public later brought the victim to the riverbank. Rescuers administered emergency aid before a Ministry of Health medical team confirmed his death.

The body has been handed over to the police for further action.
