More than 51,000 pet laser toys have been pulled from shelves across the United States after regulators identified a serious safety issue involving button cell batteries. The recall affects low-cost items sold nationwide over nearly three years. Authorities say the concern centers on the risk these small batteries pose if accessed by children, raising broader questions about product safety compliance and packaging standards in everyday consumer goods.
The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), targets “Lil’ Buddies Pet Laser Toys” distributed by Los Angeles-based JC Sales. According to the agency, approximately 51,160 units are affected, all of which were sold between February 2023 and November 2025 for about $1.
These products, manufactured in China, were available through discount retailers in states such as Arizona and California, as well as online via the company’s website. Despite their intended use as pet toys, officials warn that their design creates an unintended hazard for children.
Battery Compartment Flaw Raises Safety Compliance Concerns
The central issue identified by regulators is a failure to meet federal safety standards for products containing button cell or coin batteries. According to the CPSC, the battery compartment in the recalled toys is not properly secured, making it easy for children to access the batteries.
This design flaw violates mandatory requirements aimed at preventing accidental ingestion. The same notice explains that the products were also not sold in child-resistant packaging and lacked the warning labels required under Reese’s Law, which governs safety standards for such batteries.
Button cell batteries, often used in small electronic devices, can cause severe internal injuries if swallowed. According to the CPSC, ingestion can lead to internal chemical burns and, in extreme cases, death. The agency describes the risk as a “deadly ingestion hazard,” emphasizing the seriousness of the defect.
The recalled toys are identifiable by their white casing with blue paw print designs and model number 24496, printed on the packaging. Each unit was sold with three button cell batteries included, increasing the potential exposure risk.

No Reported Injuries but Consumers Urged to Act Immediately
Despite the identified hazard, no incidents or injuries have been reported so far in connection with the recalled products. Still, regulators are urging consumers to stop using the toys immediately as a precaution.
According to the recall notice, customers should contact JC Sales to receive a full refund. The company has instructed buyers to dispose of the product and submit photographic proof via email to complete the process.
The guidance also highlights the importance of proper battery disposal. Button cell batteries should be handled as hazardous waste and recycled or discarded in line with local regulations to minimize further risk.
This recall comes amid a series of recent safety alerts involving consumer products, including other items flagged for risks to children. According to federal officials, such actions are part of ongoing efforts to enforce compliance and reduce preventable injuries linked to everyday goods.
