Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has revealed that cybercriminals attempted to extort US$10 million from the government following a cyber-attack on Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad’s (MAHB) digital infrastructure. The demand, however, was swiftly dismissed, with Anwar stating that he did not even take five seconds to reject the ultimatum.
Speaking at the 218th Police Day celebrations, Anwar underscored the growing threats of cyber-attacks and emphasized the government’s firm stance against bowing to criminals. He mentioned of recently held discussions regarding cyber threats and hacking incidents, particularly focusing on MAHB's Cyber Attack and Hacker's $10Million ransom demand. .
Anwar further stated that part of the discussions revolved around handling the situation, including the hacker’s demand for a ransom. However, he stressed that Malaysia would never compromise its security by complying with such threats. “This country will never be safe if its leadership and system allow us to bow to the ultimatum of criminals or traitors, whether from within or outside the country,” he declared.
The Prime Minister's firm response highlights the government's commitment to strengthening national cybersecurity though specific details regarding the attack remain undisclosed.
Anwar also emphasized the importance of increasing cybersecurity investments, urging more resources to be allocated to law enforcement agencies such as the police and Bank Negara Malaysia to fortify defenses against future cyber threats. He stressed that cyber risks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and require a comprehensive, well-coordinated response.
Earlier this month, Anwar had expressed confidence in Malaysia’s ability to counter evolving cyber threats.
Cyber-attacks on key national infrastructure have been a growing concern globally, with governments and corporations facing heightened risks from hackers seeking financial gain or attempting to disrupt critical systems. In light of this, Malaysia also needs to take proactive steps to enhance its cybersecurity framework, ensuring the protection of its digital assets and infrastructure.
The government remains committed to addressing these challenges through strategic investments in technology, expertise, and collaboration with global cybersecurity entities. Anwar’s rejection of the ransom demand sends a clear message that Malaysia will not succumb to cyber threats, reinforcing the country’s stance on maintaining digital sovereignty and security.
