US special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to meet Ukraine's National Security Council Secretary Rustem Umerov later this week, White House sources told dpa, with the talks set to take place in Miami.

Details on the timing and agenda of the meeting were not disclosed. Ukrainian officials did not immediately confirm the visit, saying only that Umerov was unable to attend a parliamentary inquiry hearing in Kiev due to him travelling abroad.

In late April, US President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the possibility of a truce linked to Russia's Victory Day celebrations on May 9, which commemorate the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany.

Russia's Defence Ministry later announced a two-day ceasefire to take effect on Friday. Kiev responded by proposing that hostilities halt earlier, from May 6, but Moscow has so far not responded to the offer.
