US issues new airport mandate in response to Ebola outbreak

  • The Department of Homeland Security has implemented new travel restrictions for flights originating from countries affected by the recent Ebola outbreak in Africa.
  • As of Thursday, all flights carrying passengers who have been in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within the past 21 days will be diverted.
  • These diverted flights will now exclusively land at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) for enhanced public health screening measures.
  • The decision follows an incident where an Air France flight with a passenger from the DRC was mistakenly allowed to board and subsequently diverted to Canada.
  • The World Health Organization reports approximately 600 Ebola cases and 139 deaths in the DRC, expressing deep concern over the outbreak's scale and speed.
