US launches new wave of strikes on Iran ahead of Trump’s national address

  • The United States has launched strikes on Iran for the sixth night in a row, including on an island that helps the regime exert significant control over the Strait of Hormuz.
  • US Central Command confirmed that a strike targeted Iranian defence and missile sites on Greater Tunb Island, which is used to control the key shipping waterway.
  • Iran and the United States have engaged in a week-long escalation of hostilities, largely unravelling last month's truce, with both sides exchanging intensifying attacks.
  • US forces also blockaded Iranian ports again this week and fired on a tanker near Kharg Island while projectiles struck Qeshm Island and Bandar Abbas, home to Iran's largest port.
  • Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on US military bases in neighbouring states, resumed its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and threatened to close the Bab al-Mandeb strait via its Houthi allies.
