Democratic congressman Al Green was removed from Trump’s State of the Union after protesting a racist video of the Obamas posted on the president’s account.
WASHINGTON: A Democratic lawmaker was ejected from President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address after holding up a sign reading “Black people aren’t apes!”.
The protest by veteran Texas congressman Al Green referenced a racist video of Barack and Michelle Obama posted on Trump’s Truth Social account earlier this month.
The footage, which was later deleted, depicted the first Black president and first lady in US history as monkeys, sparking widespread outrage.
Green stood up as Trump arrived to address the joint session of Congress, waving the protest sign before someone in the crowd appeared to try and grab it.
The Black congressman stood his ground and was still holding up the sign as Trump began his prime-time address.
He was eventually escorted out of the chamber amid chants of “USA! USA! USA!” from other attendees.
Last year, Green shook his cane at Trump and shouted during a presidential address to Congress, prompting jeers from Republicans.
That incident also led to congressional aides escorting him out as Trump looked on.
