A DEMOCRATIC member of the United States House of Representatives, John Larson, announced on Tuesday that he had filed formal articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, citing growing concerns over the president’s handling of the war with Iran and his overall conduct in office.
According to reports from Anadolu Ajansi (AA), Larson stated that the action was prompted by what he described as an increasingly unstable president who threatens the safety and well-being of the American people.
He also called on members of the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment of the Constitution to remove Trump from office.
“Donald Trump has crossed every threshold for removal from office, and the situation is deteriorating,” Larson said in a statement, criticising what he described as an “illegal war in Iran” and warning of the potential consequences for both American lives and the national economy.
He added that Trump “is either unable or unwilling to faithfully execute the duties of his office and is placing the nation’s security and economic stability at risk.”
While President Trump recently announced a two-week suspension of military operations against Iran, several Democratic lawmakers renewed calls on Tuesday for his removal, citing concerns over war crimes, reckless decision-making, and unfitness to hold the presidency.
They also urged the activation of the 25th Amendment.
Anadolu Ajansi reported that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer welcomed the temporary ceasefire but criticised Trump’s earlier statements, which he described as “nonsensical rhetoric,” and called for continued oversight of the situation.
Senator Ed Markey emphasised that the ceasefire does not absolve the president of responsibility, describing the conflict as “illegal” and urging Congress to reconvene immediately to halt hostilities and take action to remove Trump.
“Donald Trump cannot threaten war crimes with impunity. Congress must return to session now to stop this war and remove Donald Trump,” Markey said on the social media platform X.
Section 4 of the 25th Amendment allows the vice president, together with a majority of the Cabinet or another body designated by Congress, to declare that the president “is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”
Should such a declaration be made, the vice president immediately assumes the powers and responsibilities of the presidency as acting president.
